It all started with one mayor’s vision. A new distribution station built right in the middle of a residential area. It needed to be quiet, safe, and invisible. Taking these criteria into account, Anaheim city council decided to build the station underground – the first of its type in the USA. Developments in the field of gas insulated switchgears, or GIS technology for short, meant that this was possible. Thanks to their compact design, these switchgears take up a lot less space than conventional stations.
The 40-meter-long and 34-meter-wide underground structure was built ten meters below ground. It is covered by a new, carefully designed park. All of the cables – 80 km in total – run underground.
