HVDC
OVERCOMING BOUNDARIES
The future of energy supply should be climate-neutral. What’s hidden behind the four letters H, V, D and C plays a key role on the path to this ideal. It stands for High-Voltage Direct Current. The technology makes it possible to transport electricity over long distances with virtually no loss, transcending borders in both the figurative and actual sense. Taking a look into the future, we can see how HVDC will connect countries and continents via supranational energy networks (so-called supergrids). We see how wind and solar power can be easily integrated into grids in remote regions using HVDC. And we’ll see even more applications.
With our innovations in the field of HVDC cable accessories and the intended establishment of our own product approval and product development laboratory, at PFISTERER we are making our contribution to ensuring that this future technology can play to its strengths.
Production
OF INNOVATIVE PRODUCTS IN THE USA
Grid infrastructure in the United States faces many challenges: In addition to the need for modernization and higher requirements due to extreme weather events, the expansion of renewable energy must be driven forward. In order to support projects in the USA with innovative solutions, PFISTERER is setting up a site in Rochester, New York. Its different areas: production, sales, training center, cable assembly and testing.
Clean energy
WITH TECHNOLOGY THAT ENABLES FLOATING OFFSHORE WIND
Offshore wind power is experiencing strong growth worldwide. And with good reason: it carries the hopes of the energy transition because floating offshore wind turbines can be used in deep waters under optimal wind conditions. The technology therefore opens up new areas for clean energy.
With innovations for submarine cables and floating structures, PFISTERER is helping bring this potential to fruition.
SEANEX 145 kV:
RELIABILITY FOR THE FUTURE
Offshore wind power is increasingly focusing on higher voltage levels. They improve the efficiency of energy transmission, minimize transmission loss and massively increase the economic viability of large wind farms.
This requires a technological upgrade of turbines, substations and cables. Together with SEANEX, PFISTERER has developed an innovative high-voltage connection system for offshore turbines up to 72.5 kV that is proving itself worldwide. We are currently working on the successor for voltage levels up to 145 kV.
Localization
IN SAUDI ARABIA
The economy in the Middle East is growing rapidly, as is the demand for energy. This requires high levels of investment in grid infrastructure – on two levels. It must be both modernized and expanded in order to feed in renewable energies efficiently and make the general energy supply reliable. The combined solution is smart grids and regional interconnectors. Both increase grid stability and promote international energy trading. Smart grids make use of modern communication technologies and coordinate the different parts of the energy system, such as power generation and consumption, while interconnectors link the power grids of two countries.
With the establishment of a new site in Saudi Arabia, including a sales and training center and a local production partner, we are contributing to the exciting development in the region.
Development
OF THE FIRST PLUG-IN UNIVERSAL SUBMARINE CABLE REPAIR JOINT UP TO 170 KV
PFISTERER is developing a universal repair joint for submarine cables up to 170 kV on behalf of transmission system operator TenneT. Universal means: the one-size-fits-all solution will eliminate cable faults safely and quickly with minimal storage requirements – completely independent of the design or manufacturer of the relevant cable.
