PFISTERER Bolsters HVDC, a Technology of the Future: Topping-out Ceremony Marks a Major Step Toward Modern Energy Grids
With today’s topping-out ceremony, PFISTERER Holding SE has reached an important milestone in the construction of its new HVDC qualification center at its headquarters in Winterbach. Approximately six months after the groundbreaking ceremony, the structural work has been completed—commissioning is scheduled for the first half of 2027.
The new center is being built as part of an investment of approximately 30 million euros and will play a central role in the development, testing, and qualification of modern high-voltage direct current (HVDC) technology. It includes a state-of-the-art high-voltage test facility as well as a materials development and testing laboratory, enabling PFISTERER to conduct development, type, and routine tests for cable assemblies and systems at the highest voltage levels.
KEY TECHNOLOGY FOR THE EXPANSION OF MODERN ENERGY GRIDS
The expansion of renewable energy is placing new demands on power grids worldwide: energy must be transported over long distances efficiently and with minimal losses. HVDC is a key prerequisite for this, for example in connecting offshore wind farms or establishing cross-border power links. “HVDC is the backbone of tomorrow’s energy supply,” says Dr. Konstantin Kurfiss, member of the Executive Board of the PFISTERER Group. “The new qualification center strengthens our technological leadership, accelerates innovation cycles, and makes a key contribution to the global expansion of modern and sustainable energy grids. At the same time, we ensure that components and systems are tested under realistic conditions and reliably qualified, enabling us to translate innovations more quickly into robust and marketable solutions for international projects.”
INVESTMENT IN GLOBAL GROWTH AND GERMANY AS A BUSINESS LOCATION
The expansion of HVDC infrastructure is gaining significant momentum worldwide. Energy suppliers and grid operators are investing in new transmission capacities to efficiently integrate renewable energies into existing grids. With the new qualification center, PFISTERER is thus strengthening its position as a technology partner in the international HVDC market and specifically expanding its capacities for the implementation of complex projects. The combination of development, testing, and qualification at a single location makes it possible to efficiently meet the rising demands for performance, reliability, and scalability of modern grids. For customers, this primarily means greater planning certainty and shorter development times—a decisive advantage in a market increasingly characterized by technological complexity and speed.
“The fact that PFISTERER is making a targeted investment in Winterbach is a clear signal of the strength of the Rems-Murr district. We offer excellent conditions for innovative industry and skilled workers. This investment also strengthens our regional economy in the long term and demonstrates that future technologies have a place here with us,” says Dr. Richard Sigel, District Administrator of the Rems-Murr district. “Our roots are here in Germany, and we made a conscious decision to invest in the Winterbach site. Because we are convinced that industrial value creation, technological excellence, and innovation have a strong future here. In addition, we are creating additional jobs in the areas of development, testing, and engineering,” explains Johannes Linden, Spokesperson and Member of the Executive Board of the PFISTERER Group.
At the same time, the company is making an important contribution to positioning Baden-Württemberg as a leading innovation hub for energy and high-voltage technology. Consolidating core competencies at the headquarters promotes knowledge development in the region and strengthens local industrial value creation. Furthermore, the investment is a clear commitment to Germany as a business location.
PFISTERER is making targeted investments in Winterbach to further develop key future technologies locally and support international projects even more efficiently. In doing so, the company combines its global market presence with strong regional roots.
