PFISTERER Technology Connects Japan’s Largest Offshore Wind Farm: Kitakyushu Hibikinada

Winterbach, Germany – The Kitakyushu Hibikinada offshore wind farm fed electricity into the grid for the first time in March 2026, officially entering its operational phase. With a maximum output of 220 MW, it is currently the largest operating offshore wind farm in Japan. PFISTERER supplied the electrical connection technology that links the 25 offshore turbines to one another and to the wind farm’s internal grid. Each turbine has an installed capacity of 9.6 MW. Delivery was carried out in cooperation with the Japanese cable manufacturer Furukawa Electric. Located off the coast of Kitakyushu, the wind farm will generate around 500 million kWh of electricity per year, enough to supply approximately 170,000 households.

Strengthening offshore wind power in Japan

The Kitakyushu Hibikinada project was developed and is operated by Hibiki Wind Energy Co., Ltd. Offshore construction works were carried out by a joint venture formed by Penta-Ocean Construction Co., Ltd. and Nippon Steel Engineering Co., Ltd. The project represents an important step in the development of offshore wind power in Japan and illustrates the growing role of renewable energy in the country's energy mix. “We are proud to contribute our technology to an important offshore project in Asia,” says Dr. Konstantin Kurfiss, Member of the Executive Board of PFISTERER Holding SE. “Reliable power transmission between the turbines is a critical success factor and this is exactly where PFISTERER’s technical strengths come into play”.

Cooperation with Furukawa Electric

Through its contribution to the Kitakyushu Hibikinada project, PFISTERER further strengthens its presence in Asia and continues to expand its collaboration with established partners in the region. “The Asian market continues to grow, and Japan is investing steadily in offshore wind farm capacity. The Kitakyushu Hibikinada project clearly shows the importance of dependable technology partners throughout the supply chain”, says Mr. Yukihiro Yagi, General Manager of the Power Cable division of Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd.
