Green electricity for urban centers in Rhineland-Palatinate

The challenge

The geographical conditions of the low mountain range, characterized by striking differences in altitude and dense forests, posed specific challenges for the installation of underground cable systems. The task was to construct an underground cable route almost 18 kilometers in length that would reliably transport renewable wind power from the Hunsrück to the region’s urban centers.

The solution

PFISTERER successfully planned and implemented the entire cable system for Westnetz. The turnkey solution not only included the cables, but also all connecting elements such as earthing and cross-bonding sleeves. The challenge of the installation was overcome by using cables with different conductor cross-sections of 1,200 and 1,800 mm², which were seamlessly connected via special transition joints.

Products used

PFISTERER supplied the entire cable system as a turnkey solution:

  • MSAs sleeves
  • Link boxes
  • ESS cable terminations

Special features

Future-proof: aside from the three phases already laid, additional empty conduits were integrated in order to be able to implement future extensions flexibly and easily. This well-conceived design guarantees long-term investment security for the network operator. For grid operator Westnetz, the project represents the longest underground 110 kV XLPE cable system in Rhineland-Palatinate.
