High-tech for good vibrations: optimum damping systems for overhead lines in Vienna

The challenge

Critical winds can cause considerable damage to overhead lines, such as snapped cables and cracked foundations. The overhead lines between Wiener Netze’s Südost and Liesing substations were particularly affected, where placed damping systems were required to prevent this kind of damage.

The solution

PFISTERER used a comprehensive procedure to determine the ideal positioning of the damping systems. Complex computer simulations were deployed to calculate the exact positioning of the dampers to ensure that they were correctly positioned at the zero points of the vibrations. In addition, a specifically developed vibration recorder was used to establish vibration frequencies, amplitudes, wind speeds and ambient temperatures over several months in order to check the effectiveness of the damping systems during operation.

Products used

  • Vibration recorder VIBREC 500
  • Damping systems

Special features

The vibration recorder enabled precise testing of the damping systems in conditions of real operation to ensure that the systems function optimally. The combination of computer simulation and continuous monitoring guaranteed an effective reduction in wind-induced vibrations and thus ensured reliable “good vibrations” at Wiener Netze.
