Thinking ahead: how future technology comes about

The challenge

In the field of compact cables, ever higher demands are being placed on the stability and safety of insulating crossbars. When constructing a prototype for a 420 kV insulated lifting beam, PFISTERER experts faced the challenge of coping with a vertical peak load of 150 kN. The goal was to resolve the contradictions between the mechanical load capacity and the electrical requirements of the pressure insulator rod.

The solution

PFISTERER took a methodical approach: Using computer simulations and complex mathematics, the engineers determined the ideal shape of the pressure insulator. The fiberglass rod inside had to withstand the mechanical loads as well as meet electrical safety requirements. The solution developed was tested in a Swiss lab under real conditions and passed the test with flying colors.
